Kyoto had been the capital of Japan over 1,000 years, and have played an important role to nurture Japanese culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum of Kyoto was established in 1988 to exhibit Kyoto’s history and culture. In 2011, the museum was renovated to experience hon-ma-mon<\/em> (“real thing” in Kyoto dialect) for the next stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So… what do you know about Kyoto? Uh… somewhat exotic? That’s fine. They will show a brief history of Kyoto and its cultural evolution through impressive multiple media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum Annex<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The brick building, which is somehow rare in today’s Japan, at the corner of Sanjo avenue and Takakura street is the Museum Annex. This is formerly the Kyoto Branch of the Bank of Japan, built in 1906.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one example of modern architecture on Sanjo avenue. As mentioned, the history of Kyoto is over 1,000 years, so early 20th century or even late 19th century is “modern” here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roji Tempo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After walking around Kyoto, you might think… “Buildings are made of concrete. Where are Japanese exotic houses!?” While many temples, shrines, and other historic buildings were built some hundreds years ago, other residences, accommodations and shops are quite new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shops and restaurants in Roji Tempo<\/em> (\u308d\u3046\u3058\u3066\u3093\u307d) are designed to represent late Edo<\/em> era (also known to be the Samurai<\/em> era) style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roji Tempo is located on the 1st (ground) floor of the museum building, and admission is free. If you have purchased a museum ticket, show the stub. Some shops and restaurants offer a discount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four your information, Roji<\/em> means (narrow) allay, and Tempo<\/em> means shop or premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
